MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s opposition said on Sunday it was concerned about the current acting president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s continued meddling in the electoral process.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Council of Presidential Candidates, a conglomerate of opposition parties raised fear that free and fair polls would not be held on time because of simmering tensions over what some of the political stakeholders consider unfair election process.
“The council is concerned about the meddling of the term-ended president in the electoral process,” opposition leaders said in a statement.
“The council urges the government and regional presidents to immediately address current challenges and prepare for those that may emerge to ensure that free and fair elections take place on scheduled time.”
It comes amid heightened dispute over Somaliland and Jubaland electoral delegates and simmering tensions in Hiran region, where troops loyal to a former army officer threatened to disrupt polls.
