NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Hundreds of young people began responding to a weekend call to arms by the president of Ethiopia’s Amhara regional government to fight the forces of the neighboring Tigray region’s ruling party, days after Tigrayan fighters advanced into their region.
The regional president Agegnehu Teshager called on “all young people” to take up arms against the Tigrayan fighters, who have recently claimed advancing deeper south into Amhara region.
Young people and government employees were seen lining up on Monday responding to the regional leader’s call, a resident in the town of Debark, 40 km south of Zarima in northern Amhara, told Reuters news agency.
Ethiopia’s federal troops and forces of several regions, including Amhara, Afar, Somali and Oromo have been mobilizing for a new showdown with the Tigrayan fighters in the north as fighting in the region seems set to intensify.
