MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia will choose a new president on Oct. 10 in an indirect election, the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said on Tuesday following a two-day meeting with regional presidents, in last-ditch efforts to hold free and fair polls in the strife-torn nation.
The announcement has come after speculations that the country’s leaders would agree on revising a deal signed in May that had ended months-long stalemate over the upcoming elections.
Before the presidential election, clan leaders will select delegates who will then choose MPs to complete the process.
Members of parliament will pick a president at a venue in the capital Mogadishu in October. Elections were meant to take place in late July as required by a deal signed by federal and regional leaders on May 27 but the schedule has again been changed as deadline approached with little achievements made.
There were reports that the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble rebuffed a request by the president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to attend the conference on Monday, in what opposition leaders say may have derailed the electoral process, weeks after premier’s efforts had defused tensions over delayed polls.
