MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said on Monday his government will only talk to Ethiopia if Addis Ababa cancelled its controversial sea access deal with the break-away region of Somaliland.
Speaking at a ceremony held in the presidential complex, Mohamud reiterated that his government and Ethiopia have a common enemy, which is the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab. He added that they will not sit idly by if attacked by Addis Ababa, warning that Ethiopia’s attempts to annex land along the Red Sea could only inflame a new cycle of decades-long conflict between the two countries.
The remarks come a day after gunmen killed seven people, including six Ethiopian nationals in southern Somalia’s Beled Hawo town in Gedo region. No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack which comes amid simmering tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa. read more
