Death toll mounts after blasts rock biggest market in Somalia’s capital

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 15 people were killed and dozens of others wounded after blasts hit shops at Bakaro, a popular open-air market in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Tuesday.

The explosions have come months after authorities deployed thousands of military police and plain-clothed intelligence officers to ramp up security in the city and prevent attacks by insurgents.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the deadly the attacks, but the deputy mayor of Mogadishu blamed insurgent groups fighting to topple the Western-backed Somali government.
