At least 5 Kenyan Police Officers Killed in an Overnight Militant Attack on Garissa County Outpost

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) –At least 5 Kenyan police officers were killed in an overnight Al-Shabaab attack targeting Yumbis outpost in Kenya’s Garissa County.

Casualties on the part of Kenyan police units in Yumbis outpost has increased with local reports saying at least 5 officers were killed in the overnight attack on Wednesday with more than 10 others wounded.

Local police officers say police reinforcements dispatched soon after the attack were targeted with roadside bomb explosions that caused casualties and enabled militants to cut off Yumbis outpost to outside support.

It’s not yet reported the extent of casualties incurred on reinforcement police units targeted on their way to Yumbis. Local police officials said security officers responding to the attack narrowly escaped death after being hit by a roadside bomb.

The Al-Shabaab militant group based in Somalia and Kenya claimed credit for the attack which took place on Wednesday evening.

Residents say militants also destroyed Safaricom telecommunication mast in Yumbis after completely taking over control of the town following a fierce exchange of gunfire with security forces that lasted for more than an hour.
