Ethiopia’s ambassador apologizes over remarks denying Somalia’s nationhood

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia Mukhtar Mohamed Ware on Sunday apologized over his recent remarks denying the nationhood of the neighboring Horn of Africa nation amid escalating tensions over Addis Ababa’s move to ink a sea access deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland.

“I sincerely apologize to the government and people of Somalia. My words were misguided, and I never intended to harm our relationship,” Ware said in a statement on X.

“Somalia and Ethiopia share a deep bond, and I’m committed to working diligently as the ambassador to strengthen the ties between out sisterly nations for enhanced cooperation.”

In a recent interview with Ethiopian local media, Ware said Somalia is a nation created by colonialists and asserted that Somaliland is an independent country which has both de facto and juridical authority to sign international agreements.
