MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somali government expressed concern that the mandate of the UN mission in the country has been transforming in a way which is not proportionate with the achievements made on the ground by the current administration.
Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations Abukar Osman speaking at a Security Council Meeting said UNSOM’s mission has become reactive to the events, with little ability to provide political and technical assistance on critical issues that are fundamental to Somalia’s state-building agenda.
“We firmly believe that the time has come to reassess the mandate of the UN in Somalia with a view of more flexible responsive mission to the rapid changes and properly aligned with Somalia’s priorities at this critical juncture.” reads statement issued by Somalia’s ambassador to the UN.
The ambassador also suggested redesigning quarterly Secretary General Reports to contain less narrative, less details about specific events and more in-depth analysis of major issues as well as recommendations and conclusions.
