MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Employees at Somalia’s COVID19 call center are complaining about unpaid salaries for more than a month after former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire was removed in a parliament vote of no-confidence.
Around 80 employees at the COVID19 health center based in Mogadishu say they have not received their salaries for a month, which has significantly discouraged the battle to curb the spread of the virus.
Doctors and other health professionals at the center, which is currently headquartered at Maida hotel compound in Mogadishu, said their salaries were diverted by officials at the office of Somalia’s former Prime Minister, who are currently working with the acting PM.
Among those who have not received their salaries are 15 doctors, who have been at the forefront of the fight to arrest the spread of the contagion.
The officials who were accused of stealing salaries of the COVID19 call center employees are still serving government posts.
Employees asked the federal government and concerned offices to immediately step in and help them receive their rightful salaries.
In Somalia, a country that saw decades of conflict and prevalent corruption, diversion of public employees’ salaries has been a common practice within government institutions despite claims by the current administration that it showed zero tolerance to corruption.
