MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –Somalia welcomed a ceasefire announcement in Libya amid the increasing presence of Somali mercenaries in the war-torn North of Africa nation.
In a statement, Somalia’s federal government said it welcomed the “important consensus” announced by the Government of National Accord of Libya and the House of Representatives on August 20.
In addition, the Somali government stressed the ceasefire, suspension of military operations and the activation of the political process in the country were crucial for reaching a “permanent solution”.
On Friday, Libya’s internationally recognized government in Tripoli and the leader of a rival parliament in the east of the country announced a ceasefire which offered hope for a de-escalation of a regionalized conflict that has wracked the country since the 2011 uprising, displacing hundreds of thousands, slashing oil production and opening space for migrant smugglers.
The statement by the Somali federal government has come amid increasing presence of hundreds of Qatar and Turkey trained Somali mercenaries who are actively participating in GNA’s fighting against Haftar’s army.
The six member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has also welcomed the ceasefire announcement in Libya, the UAE news agency WAM reported on Saturday.
