Somalia’s former presidents condemn parliament vote to approve constitutional changes

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s former Presidents on Wednesday condemned parliament vote that had given the green light for amending the constitution despite strong opposition from some of the Horn of Africa country’s political stakeholders.

Former Presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo accused the incumbent president of dividing the nation at a critical time when Somalis face an existential external threat, referring to Ethiopia’s plans to annex parts of Somalia’s coasts along the Red Sea.

Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire condemned “the chaos and crisis the presidency and parliament leadership instigated at the session of the two chambers of the Parliament of the Republic” and he called the vote illegal.
