Appointment of new police chief exacerbates rift between Somalia’s president, Puntland leader

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The appointment of Sulub Ahmed Firin as new police chief on Thursday has exacerbated rift between Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the leader of the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland Saeed Abdullahi Deni, Caasimada Online news website reported on Friday.

The two had earlier failed to settle their differences on a number of issues, including the appointment of Hamza Abdi Barre, who comes from Jubaland State as Prime Minister – a move that triggered the ire of Puntland authorities.

Mohamud’s decision to name an official from Jubaland as police boss, a post traditionally held by officers from Puntland state, was another blow to Saeed Deni, who is set to seek re-election in an upcoming regional election.
