Somalia’s president orders troops aligned with Southwest opposition to return to barracks

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday ordered troops allied with Southwest regional opposition, who had clashed with forces loyal to regional President in Baidoa several weeks ago, to return to their barracks immediately.

In an attempt to soothe tensions in the region, Mohamud said Laftagaren had accepted efforts to mediate an end to the political bickering and power fight in the region.

He vowed that if troops that dubbed themselves the “Salvation of Southwest State” do not return to their bases they will face consequences, including possible dismissals.

The remarks have come weeks after Al-Shabaab rebels seized villages on the outskirts of Baidoa due to the political turmoil in the region and following the withdrawal of troops from their frontline camps.
