TUNIS (Somaliguardian) – The United States called on Tunisia’s president on Saturday to push through an immediate return to the “democratic path” after he had seized governing powers last week, the White House said.
Tunisian president Kais Saied dismissed his prime minister, dissolved parliament and seized executive control, winning support of street rallies and triggering the ire of his opponents who called the decision a coup.
US national security advisor Jake Sullivan, in a phone call informed Saied the need for “rapidly forming a new government, led by a capable prime minister to stabilize Tunisia’s economy and confront the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as ensuring the timely return of the elected parliament,” the White House National Security Council said in a statement.
