Gunmen Take Town in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz

KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Heavily armed gunmen have taken control of the town of Kamashi in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz region amid alarm raised by the international community about the widening of the conflict in Tigray to other parts in the Horn of Africa nation, Sudanese sources told Al-Sharq news website on Friday.

It comes days after Tigray rebels took over the town of Lalibela, a United Nations World Heritage Site in Amhara region in push to force the government of the Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed to accept their terms for a ceasefire, which include the release of political prisoners, withdrawal of Eritrean and Amhara forces from Tigray region and allowing unfettered humanitarian access to the war-hit region.

Kamashi is one of three zones in the western region of Benishangul-Gumuz and is bordered on the south and east by the Oromia region, on the west by the Asosa and Sudan, and on the north by Metekel and Amhara region.

It has not been immediately clear whether the capture of the town is linked to the war between the Ethiopian government bolstered by allied regional troops and Tigray forces, and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). Somaliguardian has not been able to independently verify reports indicating the fall of Kamashi.
