Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A suicide car bomb exploded at a security checkpoint manned by military police in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Wednesday amid security tight, officials said.

An official with Daynile district administration said the driver of the car bomb had ignored orders by security forces to stop shortly before the explosion struck the checkpoint and a nearby base.

Several soldiers and a civilian woman wounded in the attack, he added.

Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying 19 soldiers were killed and 27 others, including the commander of the targeted base wounded. Three military vehicles and weapons were destroyed in the explosion, the militant group added.

Exact number of casualties has not immediately known due to authorities restricting media access to the area and information about the scale of the attack.
