Somalia: Galmudug Troops Stage Mutiny over Unpaid Salaries

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Troops in Somalia’s Galmudug regional state have staged a mutiny over unpaid salaries in the town of Gelinsor, closing a highway linking south and north Somalia.

Dozens of soldiers seized government headquarters in the town and blocked roads in and outside of Gelinsor, complaining that they have not been paid for several months since completing training at a nearby camp.

Troops have disrupted traffic within the town and closed main highway linking south and north Somalia, weeks after regional soldiers staged a similar mutiny over unpaid salaries in the town of Dhusamareb.

Local authorities have not immediately commented on complaints by mutinying soldiers.

Galmudug has been struggling to defend regional cities from Al-Shabaab, whose fighters have been encroaching on the Galmudug’s capital over the past months since Ahmed Qoorqoor was elected regional president in early February last year.
