Egypt: Senior Muslim Brotherhood Politician el-Erian Dies in Prison Aged 66

DUBAI (Somaliguardian) –Egyptian physician and senior Muslim Brotherhood leader, Essam el-Erian, died on Thursday in Cairo’s Tora prison complex, local media reported.

Egyptian prison authorities have not yet officially confirmed his death.

The 66 year-old Egyptian physician and politician had not been allowed visits for the past 6 months due to coronavirus lockdown, his lawyer told BBC Arabic.

El-Erian was a physician by professor, he was also an MP and the vice president of the Freedom and Justice Party, the political wing of Egypt’s outlawed Muslim Brotherhood opposition movement.

He and other Brotherhood leaders were arrested following the 2013 military coup led by former defense minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who later declared himself president.
