AMISOM Troops Vacate Key Bases near Somalia’s Capital

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – AMISOM troops have pulled out of key military bases on the outskirts of the Somali capital, Mogadishu after recent spike in overnight militant attacks.

Ugandan troops part of African Union peace keeping mission in Somalia have vacated military bases located in the towns of Elasha, Arbiska and Afgoye in the Lower Shabelle region. The towns are close to the capital and have recently seen spike in overnight militant attacks launched by Al-Shabaab militants targeting military bases.

Residents say troops who vacated the bases have moved to other major AMISOM military facilities in the same region.

AMISOM has not yet confirmed pulling out of its troops from key bases in the Lower Shabelle – a region where confrontations between militants and foreign troops backing Somali Army – often take place.

Soon after Ugandan troops abandoned their bases security fear has been raised by authorities in the Lower Shabelle region and the capital, prompting government orders that the army moves in to help prevent potential Islamist attacks.
