MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army seized three key towns in the central regions of Galgadud and Mudug, undercover of US air support, after militants vacated their bases in the area, local officials said on Tuesday.
US-trained special forces and clan militias captured the towns of Gal’ad, Harardhere and Eldher in Mudug and Galgadud regions. Residents in these towns fled prior to their fall due to fear of clashes between rebels and government forces.
It came months after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared a multifaceted war against the militants, saying that his government is committed to eliminating the Al-Shabaab rebel group which has been fighting for more than 15 years to topple the Western-backed government.
