NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – President of Ethiopia’s Amhara region Agegnehu Teshager on Sunday called for the extermination of Tigrayan people as conflict escalates in the war-wrecked northern region and urged local youths to take up arms against forces loyal to Tigray’s ruling party.
In televised remarks, the regional president said “unless this enemy [Tigrayans] is exterminated, we would not have peace”, in what analysts say is part of an increasing hate speech as the months-long conflict in the Horn of Africa nation expands.
Mr Teshager added that the Tigrayans are enemies of all other Ethiopian communities and “we should fight with patriotism to win against these people”.
It comes weeks after Tigray rebels have retaken much of the northern region following the withdrawal of Eritrean and Ethiopian troops from the regional capital, Mekelle. The rebels mocked a unilateral ceasefire declared by the government, though the country’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed has later reversed the move.
“I call on all young people, militia, non-militia in the region, armed with any government weapon, armed with personal weapons, to join the anti-TPLF war mission from tomorrow,” Agegnehu Teshager, president of Amhara regional government said, according to the region’s state media.
