Uganda’s president says 54 soldiers killed in Somalia base attack

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni said on Saturday that 54 Ugandan peacekeepers were killed in an attack last week by the Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab on a military base in south Somalia.

Museveni said the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) had been able to recapture the base after being overrun by the insurgents.

“Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganized themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base by Tuesday,” the Ugandan President said.

Al-Shabaab militants had stormed the base last Friday in the town of Bula Mareer, 120km southwest of the capital Mogadishu. The group claimed killing about 200 Ugandan peacekeepers in the assault.
