MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Cairo on Friday as his government eyes military cooperation with Ethiopia’s arch-enemies of Egypt and Eritrea in retaliation for Addis Ababa’s sea access deal with Somaliland.
Mohamud’s visit followed an invitation he had received from his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, days after the deal that grants Ethiopia access to a leased land along the Red Sea sent shockwaves throughout the conflict-torn Horn of Africa nation.
Somali President departed on a similar visit to Eritrea where he and Eritrean leader Asaias Afwerki discussed issues including the controversial memorandum of understanding, though both governments withheld details of the talks.
Mogadishu has recently said that there is no room for talks with Ethiopia unless it cancelled the deal with Somaliland, raising concerns by the United States that the agreement and the ensuing tensions could weaken the fight against Al-Shabaab jihadists.
