Ethiopia and UN Reach Aid Deal for Conflict-torn Tigray

Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia and the United Nations signed a pact on Wednesday to channel desperately needed humanitarian aid to the restive Tigray region where weeks of fierce clashes have killed hundreds and sent tens of thousands to neighboring Sudan.

The agreement will allow aid workers access to federal government-controlled areas of Tigray where Ethiopian troops have been fighting TPLF rebels in recent weeks.

UN officials have announced the pact, days after the Ethiopian government declared victory that followed the federal troops’ capture of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray region.

Aid agencies had earlier warned about a growing humanitarian crisis with access to the restive northern region been barred that worsened the suffering in Tigray where 600,000 people were already dependent on food aid.

Over the past few days, reports from Ethiopia indicated that food was running out for 96,000 Eritrean refugees in Tigray.
