MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Finance Minister Elmi Mohamud Nur was sacked in a new cabinet reshuffle on Saturday, days after he was forced to reinstate a director he had suspended over corruption allegations.
The development came after reports emerged that the suspension had angered Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
In a statement on social media, Nur said the Ministry of Finance is facing “political pressures” without giving further details, but expressed hope that his successor will be able to achieve progress in the country’s efforts towards economic reforms.
The dismissal has sparked questions about the government’s commitment on the fight against corruption, weeks after a number of officials were arrested and others forced to flee abroad, in what critics say is a purge against those who had worked with the previous of administration of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
