MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The southern Somalia semi-autonomous region of Jubaland has strongly condemned a recent air strike carried out by Kenya’s military that killed civilians and sparked calls for immediate investigation.
In a cabinet meeting chaired by the region’s vice president Mohamud Sayid Adan, regional authorities decried air raids on the town of El-Ade and villages near the town of El-Wak in Gedo region where Kenyan fighter jets targeted residential areas and destroyed telecommunication masts.
It comes days after the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia announced it would “investigate” the incident and would share findings with all relevant stakeholders.
Somalia’s foreign ministry said last week Kenyan air raids were aimed to “kill and maim civilians” amid heightened row between the two neighboring nations.
Nairobi has not immediately commented on the attacks that caused civilian casualties. There were multiple incidents in which Kenyan air strikes killed civilians and their livestock in rural areas in Somalia’s south over the past years.
