MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – UN envoy to Somalia James Swan urged all Somali leaders to engage in dialogue in a collegial spirit to bring an end to the current impasse over upcoming elections, with only two weeks to go before the incumbent president’s term expires.

James Swan reiterated that a broad based consensus is needed to ensure the country remains on a clear path to peace and stability.

“Once again I reiterate the view of international partners that a spirit of consensus and collaboration putting the good of the country first is what is needed at this time to ensure Somalia remains on a clear path to peace and stability,” UN envoy to Somalia James Swan said.

“We urge all of Somalia’s leaders to make every effort to engage in dialogue in a collegial spirit so that the national elections are held on the basis of broad consensus rooted in the September 17th agreement and underpinned by transparency, fairness and inclusivity,” he added

Speaking at a press conference in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug State where he held talks with regional president, the UN envoy commended Galmudug’s leader Ahmed Qoorqoor for exerting efforts in resolving dispute over the implementation of the electoral plan.

“The president and I discussed the wider political situation in Somalia particularly preparations for elections. In this regard I again commend president Ahmed Karie’s efforts in trying to resolve the dispute over the implementation of the electoral plan and I encouraged him to continue playing a role in maintaining contact between the leaders of the federal government and federal member states,” UN envoy said.

“We also discussed the importance of resolving outstanding contentious issues so that a credible electoral process can take place across Somalia.”

The remarks come hours following reports that Somali government set preconditions for resumption of electoral talks with regional states, complicating potential deal over the upcoming elections.
