AU peacekeepers in Somalia conclude first phase of troop drawdown

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) said on Friday it had concluded the first phase of scheduled troop drawdown in collaboration with the United Nations and the Somali federal government.

In a statement, ATMIS stated that seven military bases, including Mirtugo, Jazeera 1, Haji Ali, Adale, Gherile and Arba’ow had been handed over to the Somali army as part of a transition plan agreed between the peacekeepers and the Somali government.

About 2,000 African Union peacekeepers were scheduled to leave Somalia by the end of June and further 3,000 are expected to exit by the end of the year ahead of a total troop drawdown in December 2024.
