MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Clashes broke out in northern Somalia’s Lasanod town on Saturday following weeks-long ceasefire amid growing calls by the international community for an end to the conflict.
The battles between Somaliland troops and local forces seeking a reunification with Somalia continued through Sunday. Both sides exchanged heavy gunfire and artillery shells landed on residential areas in the town.
Residents say the artillery fire exchange caused a total blackout in Lasanod on Sunday after the headquarters of a local electricity company had been targeted. The gun battles also damaged the site of Telesom, a telecommunications company and a fuel depot.
Casualties by the clashes have not been immediately known.
