MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopian peacekeepers on Thursday handed over a military base in southern Somalia’s port city of Kismayo to Jubaland regional security forces, Caasimada Online news website reported.
As part of the scheduled drawdown of peacekeepers under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), more than a dozen forward operating bases have been handed over to the Somali security over the past months.
A ceremony was held in Kismayo attended by regional officials and ATMIS commanders to mark the handover of the base. Jubaland authorities said joint regional forces and army units will take over responsibility for the security of the base and nearby areas.
