MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to meet Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for talks expected to be held on the sidelines of Italian summit with African countries, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.
The two leaders will have their first face-to-face talks since Ethiopian move to lease a land along the Red Sea with the breakaway region of Somaliland angered Somalia, whose leadership has accused Ethiopia of planning to annex parts of the country’s north.
The meeting scheduled for Sunday night will be hosted by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, according to the news website, in an attempt to end the tensions, which analysts say could have far-reaching ramifications.
Somali government earlier said that there was no room for negotiations unless Ethiopia cancelled its deal with Somaliland.
