Somalia’s president arrives in Baidoa after regional leader declared offensive against militants

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Wednesday arrived in the town of Baidoa in Bay region, days after Southwest regional leader Abdiasis Laftagaren declared an offensive against Al-Shabaab militants.

Mohamud will travel to a number of districts in the region where he will urge local communities to mobilize against the Al-Qaeda-aligned affiliate, his office said in a statement.

It comes after nearly two-year long offensive against the rebel in the central region of Galgadud stalled. Militants have also retaken most of the towns earlier captured by the army, forcing authorities to request a three-month delay of the scheduled withdrawal of 3,000 African Union peacekeepers.
