Somalia’s opposition accuses president of ‘dividing nation’ at war time

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s opposition said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s unilateral policies were dividing the war-torn Horn of Africa nation amid fight against Al-Qaeda-aligned militants, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.

It came days after Mohamud stated that the country will have only two parties, a president and deputy president following a recent agreement with regional presidents that had proposed a number of controversial amendments to the war-torn country’s constitution.

Opposition leaders, including former president, prime ministers and parliament speakers decried the comments.

“It is deplorable that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud goes ahead with a policy dividing the Somali nation at a time there is need to unite people for the fight against terrorists,” opposition statement reads.

Authorities can only proceed with such amendments to the constitution after a consensus with all the country’s political stakeholders, the opposition leaders added.
