MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in the northeastern semi-autonomous region of Puntland on Thursday rejected plans by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to overhaul the constitution, Caasimada Online news website reported.
Following a cabinet meeting chaired by the regional leader Saeed Abdullahi Deni, who had earlier refused to attend a meeting between federal and regional presidents that proposed controversial changes to the constitution, focused on a number of key issues, including security and elections.
“Puntland government rejects an overhaul of the Federal Constitution of Somalia for pursuit of political interests,” regional authorities said in a statement.
