MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland troops on Friday shelled the war-hit town of Lasanod in northern Somalia during a ceremony marking 63rd anniversary of the Horn of Africa country’s independence, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.
For the first time in 15 years Lasanod hosted a ceremony commemorating the day southern Somalia gained independence from Italy in 1960. Mortar shells landed on the town shortly after celebrations began, but there have been no reports of casualties.
Former speaker of Somaliland parliament Abdirisak Khalif condemned the attack, accusing authorities in the separatist region of attempting to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
