NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – At least eight Kenyan security personnel were killed after a vehicle they traveling in ran over a roadside bomb in northeastern Kenya, Nation Africa reported on Wednesday.
The officers were traveling along the Bodhei road in Garissa County when hit by the blast claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab.
It came hours after suspected militants had shot at a bus traveling from Nairobi to Mandera at Tarbaj area in Wajir County, injuring three passengers.
Al-Shabaab attacks in Kenya have increased since Kenyan authorities agreed to join an anticipated offensive by Somalia’s frontline states, including Ethiopia and Djibouti to dislodge the insurgents from their strongholds in the war-torn Horn of Africa nation.
The rebel group carried out at least 7 attacks in northeastern Kenya in just a few weeks, in what authorities attribute to high presence of militants in the region, which borders Somalia.
On June 2, two police officers were killed and 5 wounded while patrolling the Elele-Takaba road after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Al-Shabaab militants. Four days later, 7 officers wounded in a roadside bomb attack along the nearby Ulungu-Elwak road.
