Puntland police chief threatens crackdown on dissent ahead of municipal elections

Puntland

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The commander of Puntland police Mumin Abdi on Saturday said troops will carry out attacks on people who try to oppose and disrupt municipal elections scheduled for May 25.

The official told media that regional security forces will use their right to arrest, bring to court and freeze the assets of politicians who attempt to stonewall the upcoming vote.

It comes as regional authorities plan to go ahead with the controversial vote despite accusations of widespread corruption from opposition leaders, who fear that the party of regional president Saeed Deni will secure an unchallenged victory.
