Somalia’s president announces tax hikes in move to reduce dependence on foreign aid

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Friday announced that authorities will introduce a string of tax increases as part of efforts to reduce his government’s dependence on foreign budget support.

Mohamud said the move is aimed at lowering budget support from donor and Arab countries, which is used to pay salaries of civil servants and government troops amid an ongoing fighting against Al-Qaeda-aligned militants.

It came days after local businesspeople complained about increase in taxes imposed on commodities imported from overseas countries.
