DUBAI (Somaliguardian) –The United Arab Emirates and Israel have agreed to normalize relations, US President Donald Trump said.
US president Donald Trump, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed Al Nahyan said in a joint statement they hoped the “historic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East.”
Israel promised to suspend its controversial plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank as a result of the deal.
UAE has become the first Gulf Arab country to officially announce restoring relations with Israel.
Analysts say shared concerns over Iran’s regional influence may have led to unofficial contacts between them, even before a deal was struck on Thursday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted in Hebrew “Historic day” in response to President Trump’s announcement.
A senior Palestinian official, Hanan Ashrawi strongly condemned the deal, saying the UAE had “come out in the open on its secret dealings on normalization with Israel”. In a message apparently addressed to Prince Mohamed he said: “May you never be sold out by your ‘friends’.”
