Ethiopia Shuts Down Embassy in Algeria

Ethiopia

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia on Wednesday announced it had closed its embassy in Algeria’s capital, Algiers as it began to cut costs on its foreign policy obligations.

The government of Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed cited financial constraints in closing a mission in a country that had in the past hosted talks between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

It comes 10 months after the Ethiopian prime minister ordered a full-scale offensive in Tigray to oust Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the party that dominated Ethiopia’s government for decades before Abiy rose to power in 2018, though federal troops and Eritrean forces later withdrew from the region in key battle reversals.

The decision can be reconsidered any time in the future if the economic situation in the country improves,” the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy wishes to emphasise that this temporary measure will not in any way affect the strong and historic relationship between Ethiopia and Algeria based on mutual understanding.”
