NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Kenya and other countries in the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) are concerned about the war raging in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta said, as the conflict in the war-wrecked region looks set to intensify.
It comes as Tigrayan forces press further south into the neighboring Amhara region where local troops and militias have been mobilizing along with those of other regions and the Ethiopian Defense Forces for a new showdown with fighters loyal to Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
Clashes have been underway in multiple directions and rebels claim to have gained ground in Afar and Amhara regions in what Tigrayan leaders say aim to degrade capabilities of rival forces.
Tigray forces said on Saturday that they will keep fighting until the government of the current prime minister Abiy Ahmed is removed from power, weeks after the rebel group mocked a unilateral ceasefire declared by the Addis Ababa-based adminstration as a “joke” following key battle reversals.
“We are engaged. We want to see conflict end through dialogue,” Kenya’s leader Uhuru Kenyatta said in an interview with the BBC.
