MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The speaker of Somalia’s Upper House of Parliament, Abdi Hashi Abdillahi, speaking at a ceremony held in the capital Mogadishu on Sunday, warned against partial elections in the country amid renewed tensions over the electoral process, weeks after an agreement signed by the country’s leaders ended months-long stalemate.
Mr Abdillahi leading one of two disputing wings of political stakeholders representing the breakaway state of Somaliland said he received information that the other side under the leadership of the deputy prime minister Mahdi Guled – a key ally of the current acting president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo – had been planning to hold a partial election.
The Senate leader accused rival politicians from Somaliland of obstructing efforts to reach an agreement and of adding additional three members to a committee set to manage the selection of members of parliament from the region, reneging on a previous deal.
He urged his supporters to conduct a parallel vote, should the other side move ahead with a partial election.
