MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s ambassador to Somalia Mukhtar Mohamed has said Somalia is a country created by colonialists amid tense relations between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu.
In an interview with Ethiopian local media outlets, Mukhtar, whose residence is located inside the Somali presidential palace in Mogadishu, stressed that the city is one of the worst places on earth to live and that he cannot travel without bulletproof vehicles and security guards due to threats posed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab insurgents.
The Ethiopian ambassador, whose stay in the country following the memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland drew growing condemnation from MPs and well-known political figures supported the deal.
Somaliland is an independent country that gained independence before Somalia and had different history, and culture, he added.
Amid growing speculation about Ethiopia’s plans to annex Somali towns along the Red Sea, Mukhtar hinted at possible Ethiopian annexation of parts of Somalia, saying that “Ethiopia’s borders could expand.”
