Somalia’s President Trying to Disrupt PM’s Planned Visit to Saudi Arabia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is trying to disrupt a planned visit by his prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and regional state presidents to Saudi Arabia after receiving an official invitation, Caasimada Online news website reported on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia earlier invited the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble and the regional presidents to pay an official visit to the kingdom, which the leaders accepted, just days after an agreement on controversial procedure for parliament elections sparked fresh tensions.

Somali president mounted pressure on allied regional presidents, including those of Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Southwest states and called on them not to reject the Saudi invitation.

Ethiopia’s president, a key and powerful regional ally for the Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo is being used to disrupt the visit, which Farmajo considers a threat to his re-election bid.

Somali embassy in Kenya contacted Saudi embassy in Nairobi to urge a cancellation of the invitation Saudi Arabia extended for Somalia’s prime minister to visit the kingdom’s capital, Riyadh.

It comes weeks after rift between Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble surfaced and president’s bid to influence the upcoming elections triggered a renewed squabble.
