Somalia Ex-spy Chief Detained in Djibouti After Being Denied Entry to Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in Djibouti on Friday detained former Somali spy chief Fahad Yasin after he was denied entry to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu and a Turkish Airlines flight he had been onboard was canceled and rerouted to the tiny Horn of Africa nation.

Somali Aviation authorities refused entry to Yasin, who had been dismissed by Roble over his alleged involvement in the murder of intelligence officer, following the orders of the Premier, according to local media.

Turkish Airlines forced Yasin to disembark at an airport in Djibouti and Qatar Airways barred him from boarding a flight, citing warnings from authorities in Mogadishu.

It came just a day after the President said he had suspended the powers of the Prime Minister to dismiss and appoint officials, a move that was challenged by Roble as unconstitutional, asking the head of state to refrain from meddling in the work of cabinet and the judiciary.

In a statement, a spokesman for Somalia’s President condemned Djibouti’s arrest of Yasin, who was expected to arrive in Mogadishu on Friday to attend a meeting National Security Council on Saturday, where he would submit a report on the disappearance of a female intelligence officer.

He called the arrest “unlawful” and said such “acts will not help to strengthen our ties between our governments”.

Djibouti has not immediately commented on the motive behind the detention of Yasin, a controversial figure, whose suspension by the Prime Minister triggered a destabilizing row in Somalia.
