MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Thursday suspended the Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble’s power to appoint and fire officials, triggering rebuke from political stakeholders as row in the Horn of Africa nation reaches a destabilizing level.
In a statement, the President said the decision had been taken due to Roble’s violation of the Provisional Constitution, days after the Premier ordered the Ministry of Finance that it should not make payments without his authorization and hardened his position on an investigation into the murder of a female spy Ikran Tahlil.
“The powers of the Prime Minister and all correspondence related to dismissals or appointments have been frozen,” the President said in a statement, adding that the suspension will last until the completion of elections.
Roble’s appointee to the spy agency took charge of finances and fired a key ally of the president Yasin Farey, who had been named by Farmajo to head the agency, in an effort to further tighten grip on the agency.
Somali Prime Minister is expected to react over the President’s move within hours, according to officials at his office.
