MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s authorities trained about 15000 troops in 7 months who are set to take over responsibility for the Horn of Africa country’s security ahead of the scheduled pullout of African Union peacekeepers, Minister of Security Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali said on Monday.

The minister said thousands of troops have been trained and equipped over the past 7 months to take part in an upcoming offensive aimed at dislodging Al-Shabaab from vast swathes of territory it controls in south and central Somalia.

Some of the troops restored stability in the capital Mogadishu and others are still waiting for equipment ahead of their deployment, he added.

The remarks came amid an ongoing military mobilization for a new showdown with militants in the central regions of Galgadud and Mudug.
