Ethiopia’s Tigray Forces Take Key Towns

Ethiopia

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Ethiopia’s Tigray forces have retaken control of several key towns in the south of the embattled region, weeks after the federal government announced a unilateral ceasefire.

Rebel forces announced that they would keep fighting until the region’s pre-war borders are restored after seizing most parts of Tigray, nearly 8 months after Ethiopia’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed had ordered a military offensive.

Tigray forces took control of Korem, a town 170 km south of Mekelle, and were pushing to seize control of the major town of Alamata, 20 km further south, a spokesman for the TPLF told Reuters on Monday.

Forces loyal to the TPLF advanced into the town of Alamata early on Tuesday morning after allied troops left their bases and videos circulated online show cheering crowds at the city streets as rebel forces enter the town.
