Somalia receives new weapons and helicopters amid fight against rebels

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s army received new heavy weapons and helicopters it is set to use in the fight against the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, presidential advisor has said.

In an interview with VOA Somali, Somalia’s National Security Advisor Hussein Sheikh Ali said the army had obtained 120mm mortars, Zu-23 anti-aircraft guns and helicopters, which are currently used to evacuate injured personnel.

He added that the Somali troops are now equipped with weapons that are not in the hands of their Islamist foes, expressing hope that the United Nations Security Council will lift a decades-long arms embargo on the war-torn Horn of Africa nation.
