MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud will convene a two-day meeting with opposition leaders on Wednesday to discuss efforts to dial down tensions sparked by a recent deal between federal and regional presidents, the director of the Somali presidency said on Tuesday.
It came days after former President Sharif Sheikh said he had asked Mohamud to host a meeting with opposition leaders, which is set to bring an end to differences over a recent deal proposing a presidential government system in Somalia and the extension of the president’s term limits.
A number of opposition leaders, including former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre are expected to attend the meeting.
Mohamud’s predecessor Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo will not attend the conference due to other scheduled meetings, his spokesperson told BBC Somali.
